"As long as I live, the Empire lives. As long as I wield power, the Empire's flame continues to burn."
―Ubrik Adelhard[5]

Ubrik Adelhard was a human male Grand Moff of the Galactic Empire who served as the governor of the Anoat sector during the Galactic Civil War. Upon hearing of the death of Emperor Sheev Palpatine at the Battle of Endor, Adelhard went rogue, and locked down his sector, initiating the Iron Blockade and isolating his citizens from the truth. With the help of Commander Bragh and his Purge Troopers, Adelhard started killing those who opposed the status quo or dared to propagate so-called anti-Imperial rumors or people who wanted to rebel against Adelhard.

Biography[]

Early life[]

"I was born poor, on the lifeless planet Ripurni, near the fringes of Anoat sector. Working bone-splitting jobs just to survive. But even then, I knew I was looking for something. Order. Structure. Power."
―Ubrik Adelhard remembers his childhood[1]

A male human,[2] Ubrik[6] Adelhard was born in the planet Ripurni in the Anoat sector. His family was poor and Adelhard was forced to work bone-splitting jobs under the Galactic Empire reign to survive. At some point, while working on a mine, a co-worker of his spoke ill of an approaching TK stormtrooper patrol, prompting one of them to execute him on the spot. Despite the rest of the workers being horrified, Adelhard instead found his purpose in the trooper's actions, realizing he craved this power above all else.[1]

Imperial service[]

"I absorbed it all. From leaders who knew how to wield power. And how to control it. Thrawn. Tarkin. Vader. I learned the ways of the Empire. I learned to value order over chaos. Discipline over emotion."
―Adelhard remembers his Imperial career[1]

Adelhard soon joined the Stormtrooper Corps as a TK stormtrooper, fighting from the bottom ranks of the Galactic Empire's armed forces. He scored his first kill as a stormtrooper during the storming of Abartolom, killing a Lasat who was attacking a fellow trooper.[1] A true believer in the need for a strong Empire to keep the galaxy from descending into chaos, he gradually rose up the ranks.[3] Years prior to the Battle of Yavin, Adelhard served as a junior advisor in the Imperial Military[2] and helped crush the Moraysi rebellion.[1]

By 2 BBY,[7] Adelhard had attained the rank of Commodore in the Imperial Navy, serving in the 7th Fleet as an officer in the flagship Chimaera and taking part in the Battle of Atollon.[1] At some point, Adelhand — having attained the rank of Captain — stood alongside several other Imperial officers that watched as the Emperor's Fist Darth Vader briefly choked another captain through the Force before departing, leaving the officer on their knees before Ubrik.[8] Sometime later, having risen to the rank of Admiral, Adelhard's fleet was dispatched to deal with a base of dissidents on Anoat, the sector capital of the Anoat sector. Instead of an invasion, which would lead to a prolonged and deadly conflict, Adelhard ordered his forces to gas the planet, transforming the city-world into a toxic waste dump. Many citizens believed that the incident was the result of an industrial accident, though a few were privy to the truth.[2]

As a result of his actions during the conflict, at some point before the Battle of Endor Adelhard was summoned to the Executor by Lord Vader, who congratulated him on his decision and personally appointed him[1] as the governor of the Anoat sector.[9] Adelhard also married a woman who had ended up being killed by the Kouhun, a secretive order of assassins.[2] Eventually, Adelhard became one of the rare stormtroopers to become a general[3] and he was ultimately appointed a Grand Moff.[1] At one point following his promotion, Adelhard was present within the Imperial Throne Room to watch as Emperor Palpatine punished Administrator Sly Moore for her previous mistakes by electrocuting the Umbaran with Force lightning.[8]

Post-Endor[]

Establishing the Iron Blockade[]

"Sir, we're in a precarious position. We need information. Our intel is telling us that Vader and the Emperor are d—"
"Do not finish that sentence, Lieutenant. If you value your life."

Governor Adelhard and his Master-At-Arms, Commander Bragh, shortly after the Battle of Endor

After the Battle of Endor, a cataclysmic defeat for the Empire in which the Alliance to Restore the Republic destroyed the DS-2 Death Star II Mobile Battle Station and the Emperor and the Supreme Commander, was killed,[10] reports of the Empire's defeat began to circulate across the galaxy. The Empire denounced these reports as lies propagated by the treachery of the Rebellion. When Adelhard learned that the Emperor had indeed been killed, he quarantined the Anoat sector with the Iron Blockade[2] and declared anyone who challenged the status quo would be marked for death.[1]

Despite Lieutenant Kith Alaytia's concerns, Adelhard brutally assaulted a convoy of rebel ships inspecting the sector, disabling the ships and firing upon the survivors, although pilot Rynn Zenat was barely able to escape.[1] Adelhard's forces further pursued them to the planet Darlyn Boda, where Adelhard mocked them for trying to escape, and berated their commitment to a New Republic and executed Eiro for standing up to him. The remaining rebel pilots were arrested and taken for interrogation by Alaytia.[5]

Searching for support[]

"The Empire has been defeated. Its body prone on the floor, shuddering a final breath. For all intents and purposes, the rebels have won. But my people don't need to know that. Shouldn't know that. A lie is only a lie when discovered."
―Ubrik Adelhard[1]
Adelhard-Consolidation

Adelhard considers his next move.

Intelligence about Adelhard's propaganda reached the gathered Rebel leadership on the moon of Endor through Zenat, who made it to the system on board her A/SF-01 B-wing starfighter escape pod.[1] General Landonis Calrissian raised concerns about what Adelhard's control over Anoat-produced tibanna would hold for the young New Republic; if the Empire still controlled the galactic fuel supply, he reckoned, the Empire could still control the galaxy.[11]

Accompanied by Purge trooper Commander Bragh, Adelhard insisted on any mention of the Emperor's death being silenced, and began a search for like-minded Imperials who would help him retain control of the Anoat sector. One of the first to be contacted was Anzati mystic Reyna Oskure, who reported on Adelhard's call to the Acolytes of the Beyond, at the time led by former Emperor's adviser Yupe Tashu. Tashu encouraged Oskure to accept Adelhard's call and give him the support of the dark side of the Force,[1] leading to Oskure taking up the role of Adelhard's advisor[12] and Force-sensitive enforcer.[13] Adelhard also allied with the Spice Runners of Kijimi, who provided mercenary protection to his fleet.[12]

First skirmishes with the New Republic[]

Following the arrest of the New Republic pilots on Darlyn Boda, the New Republic command dispatched its most elite agents on board a Barloz-class freighter to scout the Anoat sector. They were, however, intercepted by the Spice Runners who engaged the vessel, leading to a battle and the intentional detonation of the freighter by the New Republic agents. Despite the spice runners suffering severe damage, the agents were captured by Adelhard's forces and brought on board his flagship Star Destroyer, the Scepter. There, Alaytia, secretly a New Republic spy, released them from their cells, only for them to encounter and be stopped by Bragh and Oskure.[12] The agents were rescued by Luke Skywalker, who overpowered Bragh and Oskure, then proceeded to confront Adelhard while the agents secured an escape ship. Skywalker encountered Adelhard, who was backed by a platoon of stormtroopers, in a control room. The ensuing confrontation resulted in Adelhard falling off a catwalk, though Skywalker suspected this was not the end of him. He would be proven correct as Adelhard emerged from the wreckage of the control room swearing vengeance. Concluding that he was wrong to be so dismissive of the Force, Adelhard mused that perhaps it was time to tap into some darkness of his own.[13]

Adelhard's fall[]

The Iron Blockade led to the Uprising resistance against the Empire, one carried out by a collection of resistance fighters, bounty hunters, smugglers, and more. To combat the Uprising, the Empire used Purge Troopers led by Commander Bragh,[14] who reported to Adelhard.[2] Adelhard had a chamber within the prime tower on the Tibanna gas mining colony of Cloud City, located on the planet Bespin. In the months following the Battle of Endor, Lobot hired the pirate Kars Tal-Korla and his companions to capture the Imperial collaborator Borgin Kaa in order to extract an access code needed to open an access hatch leading to Adelhard's personal quarters. Once the hatch was open, Lobot and an intrusion team planned to capture the Governor.[15] Though Adelhard escaped, the planet was soon liberated by the Uprising.[2]

While Gallius Rax initially grudgingly tolerated Adelhard for his potential to divert the New Republic's attention away from the Contingency, he eventually decided that Adelhard needed to be eliminated.[16] Grand Moff Randd contacted Rax's spy aboard the Scepter, eventually revealed to be Reyna Oskure, and relayed Rax's command to terminate Adelhard.[17] Aided by Alaytia and Kranor, a Trandoshan bounty hunter the Spice Runners kept on retainer, Oskure staged a mutiny against Adelhard. Adelhard, Bragh, and stormtroopers loyal to Adelhard were placed in a sabotaged escape pod and launched into space. As the pod plummeted to the planet Gallowyss, Adelhard came to the realization that the Empire he devoted his life to was truly dead, and that something stronger and deadlier would need to rise in its place.[18]

In the aftermath of the mutiny, most of the New Republic leadership believed Adelhard to be dead. However, Skywalker sensed through the Force that Adelhard was still alive, and still a threat, and Calrissian and Beilert Valance agreed with him. Using a shuttle loaned to them by Valance, Skywalker and Rynn Zenat landed on Gallowyss in search of Adelhard. Adelhard and his troops quickly spotted Skywalker and Zenat on the planet, and Adelhard plotted revenge on the Jedi.[4]

By the time of the Battle of Jakku, Adelhard's Imperial forces had crumbled under Calrissian's siege. Calrissian and Lobot led a joint force of Bespin Wing Guards and New Republic soldiers as they mopped up the remaining Imperial holdouts in Cloud City. Calrissian managed to convince a dozen Imperials holed up in the Bolo Tanga room to surrender by telling them that Adelhard's story about Palpatine was a lie.[19]

Personality and traits[]

Adelhard was a human male with black hair, a full beard, and fair skin.[2] He was a strong supporter of the Galactic Empire and was willing to lock off his entire sector[14] in order to punish those who reported the truth about the Battle of Endor.[2] A man of humble beginnings, he was opposed to luxury and pomp.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Adelhard is a character who appears in the mobile game Star Wars: Uprising,[2] which was released by Kabam on September 10, 2015.[14] His first name was revealed in the 2018 reference book Star Wars: Scum and Villainy: Case Files on the Galaxy's Most Notorious, written by Pablo Hidalgo.[6]

The governor was designed by Brian Matyas. One of Matyas' first designs had Adelhard wearing a long cape and an armored chest plate similar to Darth Vader's, but this did not pass the approval process.[20]
