- "I wish I could put my fist through this whole lousy, beautiful town."
- ―Rose Tico
Canto Bight was a coastal city on the desert planet Cantonica. The city was a destination for wealthy individuals, as it was filled with casinos and racetracks. During the war between the Resistance and the First Order, Resistance members Finn and Rose Tico traveled there.
Description[]
- "So! Canto Bight! Playground of the most glamorous beings in the galaxy! Big-money card games and high-stakes fathier races! The galaxy's biggest artificial ocean! And the fanciest food this side of Coruscant."
- ―Kedpin Shoklop
Canto Bight was the capital[7] city of Cantonica, situated on the shores of the Sea of Cantonica, the largest artificial ocean in the galaxy.[2] Canto Bight was a destination for wealthy tourists, gamblers, and war profiteers who visited its lavish casinos and racetracks; child workers rode quadruped creatures called fathiers at the races. The Canto Bight Police Department were the primary law enforcement of the city.[8] The city's South Stretch Worker's District, home to the Sixth Kin,[5] was a vibrant district where residents and opportunists made a living off tourism. Canto Bight constantly evolved, with new distractions constructed onto the city's core every cycle.[9]
History[]
- "It's a terrible place filled with the worst people in the galaxy."
- ―Rose Tico
Canto Bight was a hedonistic tourism and gambling destination on the Outer Rim world of Cantonica, which was part of a corporate fiefdom known as the Corporate Sector.[8] The city was built for the sole purpose of offering the greatest, most exclusive, and expensive entertainment in the galaxy.[9] A young Binnot Ullo and Axel Greylark once swam in the oceans offshore of Canto Bight, after which they stole pies to eat under the sunshine. During the Battle of Dalna, Ullo recalled the memory as a way to try and trick Greylark into letting him escape, promising his former friend that they could do it again and become princes of the galaxy. While he seemed initially open to rekindling their old brotherhood, Greylark was unable to forgive Ullo for destroying his beloved droid QN-1.[10]
At some point, the smuggler Lando Calrissian played a card game in the city with a gambler named Brushaun, the latter losing two thousand credits when Lando won the game.[11] The Tonnika sisters pulled a job in the casino on one occasion.[12]. The scoundrel Kay Vess was also born and raised there until she left at twenty two years old to run from both the Sixth Kin and Zerek Besh of whom she fell foul of because of two botched heists.[9]
At the time of the Galactic Civil War, Canto Bight was already being referred to as the home of the most luxurious casino around by certain individuals.[13] Ronen Tagge had a penthouse in the city where he would hold parties.[14]
During the First Order-Resistance War, the Resistance operatives Finn, Rose Tico and BB-8 traveled to Canto Bight as part of a mission to recruit the Master Codebreaker in order to disable the First Order's hyperspace tracker; Finn and Rose[6] crashed[15] their ship on a public beach, leading the Abednedo businessman Slowen Lo to alert the Canto Bight Police Department.[6]
They tried to make contact with the Master Codebreaker, but were instead arrested by Canto Bight police for a traffic violation. While being detained at the Canto Bight police headquarters, the two met the slicer DJ, who offered to help them disable the hyperspace tracker in return for their freedom. BB-8 also tied-up the guards, allowing Finn, Rose and DJ to escape the jail. While fleeing through the racetrack, Rose convinced a child worker named Temiri Blagg to help them escape, in return for giving him her Resistance ring. Blagg released a herd of fathiers, which stampeded through the streets of Canto Bight, causing the town's businesses significant damages.[6]
Finn and Rose escaped on the back of a fathier to Canto Bight's outskirts, where they were picked up by DJ and BB-8, who had stolen the luxury yacht Libertine. The group then traveled to the First Order Mega-class Star Dreadnought Supremacy in an attempt to disable the hyperspace tracker.[6]
Behind the scenes[]
Canto Bight was created for Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, and it was described by director Rian Johnson as "a Star Wars Monte Carlo–type environment, a little James Bond–ish, a little To Catch a Thief."[16] Canto Bight is also themed after the American city of Las Vegas, due to its debauchery and number of casinos.[16]
The city and its casino design and look were heavily inspired by the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia. Parts of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Canto Bight scenes) were filmed in Dubrovnik in March 2016. Canto Bight chase scenes with Finn and Rose are filmed on the city main street Stradun.[17][18]
During the late design process of The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm Ltd. president Kathleen Kennedy said that Canto Bight's design didn't feel enough "Star Wars" to her, reason for which the creative team scrapped many of their original ideas for Canto Bight and ultimately drew inspiration from early drawings by Ralph McQuarrie for Jabba the Hutt's palace during the development of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi in the 1980s.[19]
